Curriculum vitae
Born on 17 April 1954 in Rad, Slovakia, he studied military secondary school, General Economy branch in Žilina, Slovakia, leaving in 1973. After three years of service he started his college studies at the Military Rear and Technical Support College in Žilina, economic branch, specialized in accoutrement support. In 1987 he finished his part-time research preparatory period at the Brno Military Academy on Operation Engagement, special engineering and rear support.
In 1995 professor Urban defended his doctoral thesis on Theory of Management and Engagement of Land Forces, Rear and Engineering Support. Having served five years in various appointments at the levels of division, regiment and brigade, he became senior lecturer at the Military Engineering and Rear Support College, Accoutrement Support Department in Žilina and moved, together with the department to Vyškov College in 1983. He was appointed accoutrement support teaching team leader, Public Economy and Logistic Service department head and finally Dean of the Faculty of National Defence Economy and Logistics. In October 2003 the President of the Czech Republic conferred him Professor Degree. He had been appointed the rector of the Vyškov University since 2003 and the vice-rector of the University of Defence since its establishment as of 1 September 2004, responsible for development. Since 1 August 2005, General Urban has been appointed the Rector-Commandant of the University of Defence.
This position entitled him a membership in Czech Rectors Conference that associates the heads of public, government and private universities in the Czech Republic.
Professor Urban was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa degree on 14 November 2006 by Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University, Budapest, Hungary. He is a member of an expert group within the Research a University Subcommittee under the Czech Parliament Chamber of Deputies’ Committee for Research, Education, Culture, Youth and Sports. He involves in many national and international scientific and expert organisations and is a member of Scientific Boards of universities both in the Czech Republic and abroad. He focuses his research, expert and publication activities on the issues of defence economic support, forces logistic support and crisis management.
As of 1 February 2009 he retired from military career.
