WINTER SURVIVAL is a four-day, three-stage endurance competition held in winter conditions, which includes “outdoor” sports’ disciplines (movement in terrain using the map, downhill and cross-country skiing, mountaineering, outdoor survival, and others). The competition of three-member teams requires a high level of individual skills and abilities as well as team co-operation. It simulates operation of a military patrol in an unknown winter mountain terrain.

Delegated referees are a part of the organization team. They cannot hold the functions of neither competition discipline officers nor team leaders. All dispatched referees will be equipped for staying and moving outdoor in winter mountains conditions – clothes, cross-country and ski alp skis, snowshoes, stopwatch.

ARRIVAL:

The championship participants shall check-in on January 31, 2010 from 14:00 to 17:00 o’clock in the Competition Office at the Ovčárna mountain hotel.
At the check-in the team leader shall submit:

  • travel orders (military personnel),
  • team roster confirmed by the commander,
  • medical fitness certificates (competitors only),
  • personal documents (service/national ID card or passport number– foreign participants).

COMPETITION OFFICE:

This office will be open in the Ovčárna mountain hotel entrance hall as follows:

  • January 31 - 14:00-17:00 o’clock,
  • February 1-4 - 08:00-18:00 o’clock,
  • February 5 - 08:00-09:30 o’clock.

At the check-in, all team leaders will receive: competition rules and a guide book, and accommodation instructions for the Ovčárna military facility.

BOARDING and ACCOMMODATION:

Boarding and accommodation shall be provided on the application forms basis. Boarding starts with dinner on January 31, 2010 and ends with lunch on February 5, 2010; accommodation will be reserved from January 31 to February 5, 2010.

Foreign teams will pay for the boarding and accommodation right in Ovčárna military facility. The price is CZK 633 per person per day.

COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT FOR THE RACE:

a) Each team member:
  1. Skiing equipment:
    For stage I: ski alp skis, helmet (morning race),
    For stage II: ski alp skis
    For stage III: cross-country skis.
    The competitors may replace damaged equipment. The rules and guide book shall specify the points and conditions for replacement.
  2. Climbing equipment:
    • a full body (combined) harness (or sit + chest harness + flat sling to connect)
    • a sewn flat sling 22kN – length 120cm
    • a round loop – diameter 6mm - length 1,5m
    • a round loop – diameter 6mm – length 5m
    • 3 pieces of screw gate karabiners (at least one of them must be HMS karabiner)
    • a climbing helmet
  3. Appropriate backpack of either khaki or black colour.
  4. Head torch + 2x spare batteries.
  5. Resources, equipment, and food for surviving and sleeping in the open air.
b) Team:
  1. a compass (1 piece)
  2. 1 piece of a climbing rope (dynamic), minimum length of 50m
  3. a first aid medical kit
  4. tea making tools
  5. emergency overnight equipment – IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO USE A TENT!!!
c) recommended optional equipment:

snowshoes, safety equipment, brakes, pulleys, and other climbing tools.

NOTE:

In Stage II the team is required to bring all the compulsory and optional equipment (they start with) to the finish of the endurance stage!

MAIN SURVIVAL DISCIPLINES during the endurance stage:

  • military climbing skills
  • casualty evacuation using the UT 2000 stretcher
  • overcoming obstacles
  • hand guns firing
  • load pulling
  • night race using a special orienteering map
  • basic survival skills
  • first aid

APPEALS:

Team leaders may raise appeals to the championship director through the competition office with a security of CZK 300, within fifteen minutes after the results are released on the official result panel. The board consisting of the following members shall decide the appeals:

  • competition director
  • sport director
  • main referee
  • representative of the Section for Physical Training, Rescue and Parachute Service of the Division for Development of Forces Branches - Operations Division of the Ministry of Defence
  • Chief of the Competition
  • Representative of the competitors
  • Representative of the team leaders

TITLES:

The 1st team in the OPEN category will be awarded the title of the International Champion of the Army of the Czech Republic for the year 2010.
The 1st team of the Army of the Czech Republic will be awarded the title of the Army of the Czech Republic Champion for the year 2010.

TROPHIES:

Teams on the 1st - 3rd places will be awarded medals, diplomas and commemorative prizes.

CLOTHING:

For ceremonies:

military personnel - field uniforms
civilians – sport outfit

Team for race:

Stages I and II

  • field uniform
  • gloves for bad weather
  • balaclava or khaki cap

If some of the pieces of outfit do not suit (except the field uniform), it is possible to use substitute outfit of black or green colour.
Foreign teams will use their military outfit – winter field uniform and other military outfit.
